M: Hey, Jane, did you see the announcement today? On the department’s website?
W: Yeah, I think it’s great we’ll have that opportunity, especially since a lot of us want to teach in the future.
M: Yeah, I agree.
W: Because the thing is, we spend a lot of time talking about our work to professors and other grad students in the department
but it’s different when you have to explain it to people who may know less about the subject
because they haven’t studied it closely.
M: Yeah, you have to explain everything so it’s really clear.
W: Exactly. So if you’re going to teach college classes later, it’ll be really useful to get extra practice explaining things in a simple, straightforward way.
And definitely for undergraduate students, it’ll help.
Because some of them may be thinking about continuing their studies.
But what we do is kind of a mystery to them, I think, since we mostly have separate classes.
And because we don’t take classes with them, there’s not that much interaction between graduate students and undergraduates.
M: It’s true. They don’t get a lot of chances to see what we work on.
W: Right! So they might not really know what we do. And this could be really helpful that way.
